Detroit: Become Human is a game that defied logic and unlocked what it truly means to be
human in a world filled with artificial intelligence. Even though the possibility of AI taking over
our world is slim, we already feel its effects such as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. Detroit:
Become Human gives us another take on this beautifully sad game: how choices impact the
characters’ outcomes in their world.
Interactive games like Detroit: Become Human hook players into selecting choices that can alter a character’s role in the story and how these choices affect the ending for them with the chance of starting over with different options. That’s the beauty of choice-based games – we love the plot twists, especially if we’re the ones that did it.
If you’re craving stories that feel like you’re in them and you want to be in control of how the story ends, here are three games that relive the moments like Detroit: Become Human.
The Last Of Us
You’re probably wondering why a post-apocalypse survival game is on this list, but hear me out. The Last of Us isn’t just a zombie game, it’s all about the emotions (plus the stress of getting zombies off of you, but that’s beside the point). You feel for Joel and Ellie as they undertake themselves into life after zombies took over, just like how Kara, Connor and Markus have to navigate themselves into an Android-infested society where they see death and chaos on a daily. Though The Last of Us doesn’t have as many choices as Detroit: Become Human, the story sucks you in just as well (its sequel will do equal justice).
Life Is Strange
Detroit: Become Human lovers will fall for this one just as much. Life is Strange is a
choice-based game with a twist: you’re allowed to rewind time that will affect the past, present and future. This means the choices you make will alter these three things on top of your relationship with other characters. You’ll fall in love with its rich and detailed storyline as you play Max and Chloe who each have their own dark secrets and figure out how to deal with them as you explore their hometown on the Oregon Coast. Life is Strange 2 delivers the same emotions and gameplay as the first game, but this one will surely hit you with the feels way more.
Hidden Agenda
This psychological thriller will leave you on the edge of your seat. How is Hidden Agenda
similar to Detroit: Become Human? Everything. You have multiple characters at your disposal to which you have to make decisions to reach the common goal or go against each other; the
storyline is engaging in which you find the “Trapper” killer, but how you find the killer is how
you pick your choices; not to mention you have the full control of how the story unfolds. With
Hidden Agenda, you have to make sure the ending you get leads to the true killer, which gives players the time to play it over until they get it right. This game is basically like Detroit: Become Human but set in a somber manner with a dark and sinister take to it.
We love these kinds of games where we have to think about the consequences of our choice. It brings out the complexity of human nature and answers the “why we do what we do” question. These choice-based interactive games provide us not only the suspense and thrill our choices become, but why our minds go towards that particular decision. If our world was like Detroit: Become Human or The Last of Us, would we be inclined to make those tough decisions? Or if we were in Life is Strange or Hidden Agenda, do we abandon our values for our own personal gain?
A little food for thought, but enough of the philosophical digression – these games will reminisce the feels you felt for Detroit: Become Human all over again.
