The best battle royale games offer their own individual features and characters that make them stand out from the rest. Whether it be the growing content of Fortnite’s item shop or the arsenal of weapons and loadouts in Warzone 2.0, each game offers different qualities that make them the best to play. Here are the top five free-to-play battle royale games out right now.
1. Fortnite
The ever-evolving battle royale of the decade, Fortnite never ceases to amaze. When it first hit platforms in 2017, Fortnite wowed players with it uniquely designed cosmetics and in-game mechanics. The distinctive building feature gives players the opportunity to win fights in exciting and creative ways, and that’s what makes the game so special.
With every new season comes new weapons and map updates, which gives players something to look forward to. From pro gamers to kids at home, Fortnite has proved to be the people’s game. Not to mention it gave us the John Wick skin, which istotally awesome.
2. Apex Legends
When Apex Legends first came out in 2019, it was an immediate success. Players were instantly enamored with the huge array of weapons and Legends that each came with a distinctive personality of their own. There is never a dull moment in this battle royale, with new Legends being released every season, and more storytelling elements alongside them. Perhaps one of the coolest aspects of Apex Legends is the fact that it is connected to the Titanfall universe. Titanfall fans such as myself were pleasantly surprised with the release of the playable Legend, Ash, an antagonist from Titanfall 2, in Season 12.
The lore of Apex Legends continues to expand, which keeps players interested outside of the game when they aren’t battling to victory on captivating maps such as World’s Edge or Broken Moon. Though Apex Legends is sometimes plagued with bugs and network issues, it is still one of the best battle royales out right now.
3. Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0
Following the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, an updated version of Call of Duty: Warzone, Warzone 2.0, was released. Fans of the franchise quickly populated the lobbies of Warzone 2.0 as several new features and changes had been added to in-game content, such as the new third-person battle royale mode.
Though the beloved battle royale offers players the opportunity to create their own loadouts with numerous weapons and abilities, it seems as though its popularity has been on the decline due to the significant changes from the original Call of Duty: Warzone. Still, casual players and pros alike will find fun in this exciting test of skill and combat.
4. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
What better way to unwind from a long day at work or school than with the free-to-play Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. This adorable battle royale pits 60 players against each other as they fight to survive rounds of obstacle courses and mini-games. Adorability aside, Fall Guys is great for casual gamers who just want something fun and lighthearted to play with their friends.
Their battle pass offers neat cosmetics to design your Bean with and has great collaboration skins such as SpongeBob SquarePants or Assassins Creed. With its exciting and sometimes silly gameplay, there is no denying Fall Guys is one of the most engaging battle royales available to play right now. Tumble your way to victory in the colorful cuteness that is Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.
5. PUBG Mobile
The mobile adaptation of Player’sUnknown Battlegrounds, PUBG Mobile released in 2018 and gave players a quick way to battle to victory. Though this game is not cross-platform, it still offers entertainment to those who seek fun on the go. Like most battle royales, players spawn in with no materials and must loot areas to find gear.
Interestingly enough, the developers of PUBG Mobile, took this feature literally, as players hilariously spawn in their underwear. Even though PUBG’s popularity has declined over the years, and may have some connection issues as it is a mobile game, it’s still an amusing game to play.
