Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick and Morty, said Thursday on the Offical Xbox Podcast that his newest game, High on Life, is polarizing among gamers due to its wild story and humor style.
High on Life is a game where humanity is threatened by an alien cartel. The player’s objective is to take down the gang and save the world. The game mimics Rick and Morty’s humor with plenty of jokes woven throughout. Reviews coming in from players give wildly different reactions. Some love the attention to a playful storyline, while others struggle to find it funny.
“Obviously, we wanted to make something that was funny, or at least to us, funny,” Roiland said. “Obviously, that’s subjective.”
Roiland said that the criticism comes at a time when the gaming industry is starved for a simple solid single-player action-adventure game with a fun story.
“We’ve known for a long time, we’re like, there’s going to be people that absolutely love this thing,” Roiland said. “And then there’s going to be people that just hate it for the same reasons the people that love it love it.”
Despite the mixed reviews, Roiland said he is okay with how the game is being received by players.
“The bottom line is that people can pick it up and have a good time,” Roiland said. “I mean, not every joke is going to land with everybody. But if we can get people to laugh more often than not, then that’s incredible.”
