Having just released this month, many fans are waiting for their paychecks to drop before getting their hands on a copy of God of War Ragnarök. Santa Monica Studios released 4 separate editions, each with its own in-game and out-of-game rewards and collectibles. After having played God of War Ragnarök, we have some insight into which edition has the best value. All editions give the base game for both PS4 and PS5.
God of War Ragnarök Launch Edition
This edition includes the Risen Snow armor set for Kratos and Atreus which was normally only available as a pre-order bonus. The armor set grants bonuses to STRENGTH, DEFENSE and LUCK while rewarding the player for launching enemies skyward. Ironically, this armor set is more useful later on when the player can unlock more abilities that make launching enemies more accessible in combat. Though it’s not a game-breaking artifact, it can serve as decent starting gear.
God of War Ragnarök Digital Deluxe Edition
This edition gives players a slew of starting gear, including the Darkdale armor and weapon set, digital artbook, soundtrack, Playstation avatar and PS4 theme. The new gear focuses on increasing STRENGTH, DEFENSE and RUNIC and makes Kratos’ rage ability a lot stronger. This gear starts off strong and gets a lot stronger when the game introduces enchantments that make just activating your rage ability enough to one-hit low-health enemies. But being able to view the art online and listen to the soundtrack on Youtube, the armor set alone might not be worth the extra $20 or so.
God of War Ragnarök Collector’s Edition
Including all the rewards of Digital Deluxe Edition, the Collector’s Edition box includes a set of polyhedral dice, 2-inch tall figurines in the style of wood carvings made by Atreus in God of War (2018), a SteelBook display case despite not coming with a disc, and a 16-inch replica of Mjolnir made from hard plastic and it all comes in a box replicating the in-game shrines with moveable doors. While exclusive to the Collector’s Edition, most people would agree that a few plastic knickknacks might not be worth the price tag, despite their quality.
God of War Ragnarök Jötnar Edition
Containing all of the previous rewards, this very rarely in-stock item also includes; a different set of dice, three pins shaped like animal heads, a replica ring from the in-game artifact, Draupnir, a cloth map of the nine realms and a 7-inch vinyl record of the official soundtrack. So only for a bit extra than the Collector’s Edition, you get some really nice collectible pieces that make most collector’s editions sweat nervously, which makes it understandable that it is currently very hard to find.
Final Thoughts
If you are looking to get the best value out of your gameplay experience, it is worth getting the Digital Deluxe Edition to round out your options for varying builds and playstyles. The artbook, soundtrack, and avatar are more or less just an added bonus. If you want the best possible value, the Jötnar edition will grant you the best collectibles at the best price, but you might have to wait a while before more boxes become available.
